Day 16 Buckland to Richmond 41km

Woke up early needed to pop to the loo. But it was so cold outside I really didn't want to go. Who would have thought 12c could feel so cold! Took us a while to get going this morning, didn't get on the road until just after 11. We had a great time in the free camping though. Steve at the pub was lovely. Said goodbye to him before we set off. Popped into the church on the way out of town as they had a lead light window from the 1350's it was very beautiful. Only doing 40 km to Richmond today but there would be a lot of hills and the occasional head wind that slowed down progress. Also kept looking for the sign for break me neck hill.  We did a long climb which Iam impressed we all got up without stopping or walking up. Then came across the sign. Thankfully the sign was at the end of the climb rather than the beginning which made it so much more fun to take pictures by it. Was a pretty hot day and the roads and drivers were pretty good. Until we got to the B31 into Richmond. It was quite a narrow road with no shoulder. Some drivers we overtaking us when there wasn't really enough space. So as the back rider in my hi vis jacket I became the blocker. If a car was coming up behind us and no cars were coming the other way we all rode in single file. But if a car was coming towards us and one behind I would ride 2 abreast until it was safe for them to overtake at which point I would start riding in single file again. This meant the car had to slow down. It worked well. If a lorry/ truck was approaching we just pulled of the road. After a quick stop in Richmond for food supplies we reached the caravan park. It was a relief to stop. A tough day for the legs.
